Pay To Play?
I have been trying to articulate in the past weeks, mostly through rather cryptic, complaining posts (sorry), my thoughts on my chosen career path, making photographs for the fine art market. The case I make for myself has two parts, the first of which I offer here, relating to the structure of the art marketplace, and how much an artist has to pay just to be seen.
I made a list of a special set...

Why do I still try to be part of a club I don’t even like? The rebel in me chafes at its rules and its meaningless fashion. I see with increasing clarity that I’m going through the motions. If it is true that one must be hungry for success to get anywhere in the fine art world, I have already failed.

The Noise Pop Festival, who are putting on the Wye Oak show, have a free iPhone app. It’s been handy to check out the opening bands. I got excited for a few minutes when it looked like The 21st Century was a Japanese heavy metal band, but the app sent me to the wrong link! The 21st Century I will actually see is a folk rock band from Louisiana. Their music is very twee. It conjures images of...

Today I looked into working on my job’s WordPress blog. The interface is similar enough to Tumblr (though a bit over-complicated), but I’m starting to wonder what the point of it will be. Still weighing my options
I’ve been exhausted the last few weeks. I’m not sure if it’s a physical fatigue from long days at work, and then going home and working on photography, or if it’s a kind of mental fatigue. I will write more when I can sit down and sort through my thoughts. I just keep wondering, why am I doing all of this? I’m not referring to the photography, but to all of the...

I just turned down the sale of a small print because I thought it might involve an obligation to the seller. Not sure if that was the right decision.

Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs) with Buster Keaton... →
The San Francisco Film Society has invited Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards to provide live accompaniment for Buster Keaton shorts at the Castro Theater on April 23. This combines two of my favorite things (silent film and Tune-Yards), so I’m dying to go! I have tickets to see Tune-Yards open for St. Vincent the following night, so it might be excessive to do both, especially since I have so...
